Fed: Abbott backs hike in alcopop price
Liberal frontbencher TONY ABBOTT has backed an overnight hike in the price of alcopop
drinks in the battle against binge drinking.
The federal tax was doubled from midnight on ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages which
are popular with young drinkers.
The increase could lift the price by a dollar a bottle.
Mr ABBOTT .. a former health minister .. says he's not going to criticise a move that
should reduce consumption.
But he's told the Ten Network when governments raise taxes they're usually at least
as interested in the extra money as they are in any subsequent benefits.
