New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a former Democrat whose city is facing a multibillion-dollar budget gap, greeted the members of his newfound political party Tuesday with a brief, yet hopeful statement at the Sheraton New York.
After welcoming some 1,500 Republicans from around the state, he urged them to enjoy their stay to the fullest extent that the convention schedule -- and their wallets -- would allow. ``While you're here, don't forget to shop,'' the mayor said. ``Go out to dinner. See a play. Spend lots of money. We need the sales tax revenue.''
