NSW: Seven prison officers attacked, injured
SYDNEY, April 16 AAP - Thirty prisoners armed with broken table legs and mop handlesattacked and injured seven prison guards during a riot at NSW's maximum security Goulburnjail today.
Two prison officers suffered serious head injuries during the 3.10pm (AEST) attack,and one had still not regained consciousness by 6pm, a NSW Department of Corrective Servicesspokesman said.
"They were suffering apparent serious head injuries," the spokesman said.
"There is some concern about the two officers, who were taken off by ambulance, butI could not say at this stage."
Five other guards were injured and taken to Goulburn Base Hospital.
The prisoners, wielding mop handles and broken table legs, attacked the guards of thetop landing of a maximum security cell block shortly before the 3.30pm muster.
All prisoners, including those who staged the attack, were locked in their cells andthe jail was secured shortly after 4pm, the spokesman said.
Staff were scouring the prison early tonight for other weapons, and a special securityresponse team had been called in to assist with prisoner control.
It has not yet been established what sparked the attack.
Goulburn jail contains the 70 bed super jail, which houses some of NSW's most notoriouscriminals, including backpacker serial murderer Ivan Milat.
