NT:New telco link connects top and bottom

The federal government says a new fibre-optic link joining Darwin with southern Queensland
will empower the nation and connect Australian cities to the global economy.

Acting Prime Minister WAYNE SWAN has announced today that the 3800 kilometre fibre-optic
link has been completed - linking Darwin to Toowoomba, near Brisbane.

The project began in February last year and cost 125 million dollars.

It will ultimately become part of the 36 billion dollar national broadband network.

Mr SWAN says this infrastructure will empower the nation, saying it's as significant
as the opening of the overland telegraph in 1878.
