Vic: Accused drug dealer Williams avoids court appearance

MELBOURNE, April 27 AAP - An application by Victorian police to question alleged drug
dealer Carl Williams about the murder of his friend Andrew Veniamin was today withdrawn
after Williams voluntarily made a statement to police.

Williams, 33, was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court today to answer
questions by Purana Task Force detectives about the murder of his associate and bodyguard,
who was gunned down in a Carlton restaurant last month.

Police had earlier successfully applied to force him to make a statement about Veniamin's murder.

But later Williams voluntarily made the statement to police and the application was
withdrawn today.

Williams, who police feared could be the next victim of Melbourne's bloody gangland
feud, was today not available for comment.

He had previously told AAP he knew nothing about the murder of his friend.

Mick Gatto, 48, has been charged with Veniamin's murder.
